Exterior: A Dark but Sophisticated Palette

The exterior of the home sets the tone for the entire design. Working with plan designers Crystal Tucker and Stuart Nash of Twin Construction, we devised a plan to scale this home on a sloped lot that fit the historic character of the Edgewood Neighborhood, but nodded to the eclectic style of the homeowners.

Utilizing cedar board and batten and tumbled natural stone, choosing a paint color for the exterior was a key decision for both the plan designers and interior designer, Lydia Hurt of Twin Construction. The homeowners wanted something dark but not overpowering—a hue that felt rich and inviting. They landed on a deep, inky shade that stands out without being black. This color adds a sense of drama and elegance, making the home feel both modern and timeless.

For the roof, they opted for upgraded shingles that mimic the look of slate. This detail provides a luxurious, old-world touch while maintaining durability. Additionally, the tumbled stone used for the exterior was repeated in the living room fireplace, creating a design that flows seamlessly from the outside in.

On the back side of the home, large open windows flood the living space with natural light and provide beautiful views of the surrounding area. A screened porch extends from the exterior, allowing for comfortable outdoor Alabama gatherings year-round. This combination of large windows and diverse textures truly brings a sense of openness and warmth to the back exterior.

Entry: A Welcoming and Artful Space

The interior design style of this home can be summed up in three words: eclectic, textured, and playful. The homeowners were committed to incorporating bold color saturation, unique textures, and a sense of fun in every room, creating a home that feels personal and expressive.

The entryway sets an impressive first impression. Designed around a standout piece of art by Mandy Maples, this space immediately introduces guests to the home’s vibrant and eclectic vibe. This painting was planned from the very beginning, setting the tone with its bold colors and defining the energy of the space.

To balance the art, a rustic console table anchors the room, adding warmth and a hint of earthiness. Overhead, a brass light fixture provides a touch of elegance, drawing the eye upward and illuminating the space with a welcoming glow. Each element in the entry combines to create an inviting, artistic space that embodies the spirit of the home.

Powder Bathroom: Bold Patterns and Subtle Elegance

The powder bathroom showcases the homeowners’ love for bold design. Wallpaper with a colorful, intricate pattern was the driving force for this space, bringing in layers of color and character. To keep the focus on the wallpaper, the other elements were kept understated yet elegant.

The floating vanity with a stone vessel sink adds a natural touch, contrasting with the bold wallpaper while creating a focal point. The brass accents in the plumbing and lighting provide warmth and continuity, keeping the space sophisticated without detracting from the lively wallpaper.

Kitchen: A Harmony of Texture and Metal Tones

The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, and here, it’s full of standout features. A large, custom zinc hood with a brass frame and tacks becomes an instant focal point, echoing the eclectic, textured feel seen throughout the home. The shape of the hood’s swoop even replicates that of the sconces and marble, creating a cohesive and intentional design flow.

To add depth and interest, the kitchen features a mix of metals that brings warmth and variety to the space. The waterfall island is another standout feature, with a muted palette and a warm beige-white paint that allows the textures and metal tones to shine without overwhelming the space.

Butler’s Pantry: A Jewel Box of Color and Texture

One of the most striking rooms in the home is the butler’s pantry, where deep green walls introduce a bold color saturation. The honed granite countertops add a sense of dramatic elegance, while vertical planking on the walls delivers a textural element that enhances the space’s charm.

The brass sink faucet and hardware contrast beautifully with the green, creating a layer of sophistication. Framed art on the walls personalizes the pantry, making it feel like a special, hidden gem within the home.

Dining Room: Bright, Textured, and Welcoming

Off to the side of the kitchen, the dining room takes advantage of natural light with wrap-around windows on all sides, creating a sunlit space perfect for family meals and entertaining. An oriental rug anchors the room, adding color and a sense of coziness, while a rattan light fixture brings a touch of organic texture.

Living Room: A Cohesive Blend of Stone and Patterns

The living room carries over the stone elements from the exterior, tying the design together and creating a sense of cohesion. Green sofas introduce a rich, saturated color, while a mix of patterned pillows brings a playful touch, aligning with the homeowners’ love of eclectic and unexpected accents.

The limestone mantle surround and fire brick trim add a stately feel to the fireplace, grounding the space and serving as a visual anchor. On the side, custom wood cabinets offer practical storage while concealing AV equipment, keeping the space functional without compromising on design.
