Balancing Function and Aesthetics

What’s your approach to balancing functionality and aesthetics when designing a kitchen remodel?

On the construction side, it’s important to recognize any structural parameters you will need to work within—defining the boundaries of what can be done given the variables on-site. At the same time, it’s important to get a list of the client’s needs and wants for the space. Once we identify the parameters, we can come up with a practical and creative solution.”

How do you start a kitchen renovation project to ensure it meets both the client’s practical needs and style preferences?

We start by learning how the client uses their kitchen daily. Pairing this with the structural realities of the project helps guide decisions on layout, aesthetics, and materials.”

Durable Materials

What are the most durable countertop materials you recommend for a busy kitchen, and why?

“Quartz countertops are your most durable option. They’re extremely hard, resistant to scratching and chipping, non-porous, and easy to clean with mild soap and water.”

How do you help clients choose between quartz, granite, or marble?

If a client is unfamiliar with the differences, I start with a brief overview of each material. Then we talk about how they live. If they want to maintain a pristine surface, I recommend quartz. If they prefer natural stone and don’t mind patina, marble works beautifully. For natural stone on a smaller budget, granite is a great choice. Soapstone is another durable natural option but typically comes at a higher price point.”

Custom Cabinetry

How do you choose cabinet finishes or hardware that are both durable and visually stunning?

Polished nickel and unlacquered brass are my favorite finishes. They bring warmth to a space and feel timeless.”

Can you share a project where custom cabinetry transformed a kitchen?

A recent project—our Mill Run remodel—is a great example. The original kitchen was dark and dated with limited counter space and storage. We rearranged the entire footprint, doubling storage with floor-to-ceiling cabinetry along one wall and adding new windows for natural light. A long island offered additional workspace, and we hid full-size fridge and freezer columns behind cabinet panels. We even concealed the dining room entrance within the cabinetry to create a seamless, elevated look.”

Creative Storage Solutions

What are some creative storage ideas you’ve implemented to maximize space?

I love including counter-set cabinets with pocket doors—essentially an appliance garage. You can hide everyday appliances while keeping them plugged in and ready to use. With these, we can also run countertop material continuously for a clean, cohesive look.”

How do you design storage that’s practical and seamless with the kitchen’s aesthetic?

I look for ways to integrate storage into the architecture of the room so it feels intentional and unobtrusive.”

Appliances

What should homeowners consider when selecting appliances for a renovation?

Think about how you cook daily. Prioritize features that genuinely support your routines.”

How do you integrate high-end or smart appliances without disrupting the design?

Almost every appliance besides the range is available in a panel-ready option now. This lets us hide appliances behind cabinetry so they don’t interrupt the aesthetic.”

Unique Hoods

What role does a range hood play in modern kitchen design?

Every kitchen needs proper ventilation. But today, a hood can also be a stunning focal point.”

Tell us about a custom hood design that stands out.

For one client, we designed a zinc-clad hood accented with brass straps and rivets. The kitchen included multiple metal finishes—stainless appliances, brass hardware and lighting, and copper knobs on the range. The zinc introduced a new tone and the brass details tied everything together beautifully.”

Kitchen Islands

What do you consider when designing a functional and beautiful kitchen island?

First, we determine how many people the client wants to seat. Once that’s set, we can build storage needs around the seating. Islands can also hide additional storage beneath the knee-space side.”

How do you customize islands for things like extra seating or prep sinks?

It all depends on how the family uses the space—meal prep, hosting, homework, all of the above.”

Additional Touches

How do you use lighting to enhance both practicality and ambiance?

Kitchens need layered lighting: task lighting for work areas, pendants for visual interest, can lights for overall illumination, and sometimes sconces for added charm and ambiance.”

What’s your advice for choosing durable, stylish flooring?

We almost always use hardwoods to create continuity throughout the home. Adding a runner brings in softness, texture, and extra protection for the floors.”

What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone dreaming up their ideal kitchen?

Find one design element you love and let it guide the rest of your selections. If you fall in love with a unique countertop slab, let it inspire your cabinet finishes, plumbing, hardware, and lighting choices.”
