For this Mountain Brook family, the goal was to transform a dated layout into a space that felt tailored, fresh, and in step with the way their family lives and gathers today. They turned to Twin Construction, along with Twin interior designer Danielle Robin and plan designer Crystal Tucker, for both the plan and execution—knowing that they wanted updated finishes and a space that felt timeless.

Rethinking the Layout
Before the renovation, the kitchen layout felt closed off and congested, with minimal natural light and prep space. Our team collaborated closely with the homeowners to create openness and improve both its flow and functionality.
Custom Cabinetry with Everyday Ease
Custom cabinetry designed by Twin Cabinet Designer Sara Giedinghagen was key in making this kitchen feel both seamless and personal. We designed the cabinets with a traditional shaker style and a warm white finish to reflect light throughout the space. Thoughtful cabinet towers were created to hide appliances and a TV to keep countertops clean and clutter-free.
Centerpiece Island Built for Living
The central island serves as the true hub of the kitchen. Not only does it anchor the space visually, but it also functions as a prep area, serving station, and casual gathering spot.
Topped with a durable quartzite surface, the island includes bar seating, making it a go-to spot for morning coffee or late-night homework.
Elevated Materials with Warmth and Texture
From the start, the homeowners wanted a kitchen that felt elevated but welcoming. We chose a timeless combination of quartzite countertops, unlacquered brass fixtures, and subway tile to create a palette that felt cohesive and character-rich.
The backsplash, a soft gray handmade tile, brings a hint of texture and movement to the space. We installed it in a subway pattern next to the striking quartzite backsplash to give the cooking area a distinct identity. Its curved shape adds warmth and dimension, appealing to the charm of the rest of the home.
Smart Storage Meets Subtle Style
While the cabinetry and countertops bring much of the beauty, it’s the hidden functionality that makes this kitchen sing. We integrated a paneled refrigerator and dishwasher into the kitchen to maintain the seamless style.
A Space That Will Grow With Them
The success of this project wasn’t just about beautiful finishes or a more open layout—it was about creating a kitchen that truly works for family function.
From the custom cabinetry to the classic white palette, every choice was made with longevity in mind. It’s a space that feels bright and fresh today but is built to stand the test of time, both stylistically and structurally.
